DomainChest vs Better Stack: Which Should You Use?

Of the monitoring tools we get compared to, Better Stack (formerly Better Uptime) is the one with the most genuine overlap: it really does monitor domain registration expiry, and it does SSL certificate expiry too. So this comparison is less "we have it, they don't" and more about how each product models the problem. We make DomainChest — here's the honest version.

The short version: Better Stack is a broad observability and incident-management platform where domain expiry is a checkbox on a URL monitor. DomainChest treats the domain itself as the thing being tracked. Which fits depends on whether your domains all have websites on them.

Where Better Stack is the better choice

It's a strong product and there are plenty of situations where it wins outright:

  • You want one platform for everything. Uptime, incident management and on-call rotations, status pages, log management, tracing, infrastructure monitoring, error tracking, session replay. If you'd otherwise buy four tools, consolidating is worth real money.
  • You need proper on-call. Phone-call escalation, rotations, incident workflows — that's a serious product we don't attempt.
  • Your domains all have websites. If every domain you own points at a running site you're already monitoring, attaching domain expiry to that existing monitor is tidy. One object, one alert path.
  • You're already a customer. If Better Stack is in place, turning on domain expiration in Advanced settings is far less work than adding a tool.

That last point is worth stating plainly: if you already pay for Better Stack, use their domain expiry monitoring. Adding another subscription to duplicate a feature you have is bad advice.

Where DomainChest is the better choice

Domains without websites don't fit the model

This is the substantive difference. In Better Stack, domain expiration is configured inside an uptime or keyword monitor — you point a monitor at a URL, then enable domain expiration in its Advanced settings. There's no standalone "add a domain" flow.

That works when the domain has a site. It fits awkwardly when it doesn't, and most portfolios are full of domains that don't:

  • Defensive registrations and misspellings you'll never build on
  • Domains parked for a future project
  • Redirect-only domains
  • Brand names bought and shelved
  • Client domains you're holding but not hosting

These are exactly the domains that lapse, because nobody looks at them. In our model a domain is the object — you add example.com and it's tracked, website or not. There's also a per-domain setting for a related detail Better Stack doesn't cover: whether auto-renew is actually on, which is its own quiet failure mode (why auto-renew fails).

The expiry setting is shared across your team

From Better Stack's own documentation: changing the domain expiration settings on one monitor "will automatically update the domain expiration settings for all monitors for this domain in your team."

That's sensible de-duplication, and for most teams it's invisible. It's worth knowing if you wanted different notice periods for different contexts — a client-facing domain versus an internal one — because the setting is per-domain across the team, not per-monitor.

Expiry alerts aren't in the free tier

Better Stack's free plan is generous — 10 monitors, a status page, log and trace allowances. But their docs are explicit on both counts: "Domain expiration alerts require a paid plan" and "Certificate expiration alerts require a paid plan."

So the free tier gets you monitors, not expiry warnings. The cheapest route to expiry alerts is a Responder license at $29/month billed annually ($34 monthly). Their docs don't name which tier unlocks it beyond "a paid plan", so if this is your deciding factor, confirm with them directly.

Our free tier includes expiry alerts on 3 domains, and paid plans start at $25/year for 25 domains. That's roughly what one month of the entry Better Stack plan costs — though you're comparing a focused tool against a platform, so it isn't apples to apples.

Nothing watches certificate issuance

Better Stack checks the certificate being served on your monitored URL. It doesn't watch Certificate Transparency logs, so a certificate issued for your domain by someone else doesn't surface. That also covers a gap that has nothing to do with attackers: certificates on subdomains you're not monitoring. If api.example.com has its own certificate and no monitor pointed at it, its expiry isn't being watched.

The honest recommendation

Already using Better Stack? Turn on their domain expiration monitoring. It works, and one tool beats two.

Choosing fresh, and you need uptime plus on-call plus incident management? Better Stack, and take the domain expiry as a bonus.

Do your domains mostly not have websites — parked, defensive, redirects, client holdings? That's where the URL-monitor model stops fitting and a domain-first tool starts making sense. Same if you want certificate issuance watched, not just certificate expiry.
