DomainChest vs Pingdom: Which Should You Use?
These two aren't really competitors, and the most useful thing this comparison can do is explain why. Pingdom is a synthetic uptime and performance monitor. DomainChest is an expiry tracker. They overlap on exactly one feature — SSL certificate expiry — and diverge everywhere else. We make DomainChest, so treat this as the interested party's account; we've stuck to what's verifiable on Pingdom's own documentation.
The short version: if you need to know when your site goes down, Pingdom. If you need to know before your domain registration lapses, Pingdom won't tell you — it doesn't check.

One important distinction before we start
SolarWinds — Pingdom's parent — does sell WHOIS-based domain expiry monitoring, as an application-monitor template in Server & Application Monitor (SAM). That's a separate product with separate licensing. Pingdom's own SSL page even cross-sells it.
So "SolarWinds can monitor domain expiry" is true. "Pingdom can" is not. Everything below is scoped to Pingdom specifically.
Where Pingdom is the better choice
Pingdom is a mature, capable product and there are clear cases where it's the right call:
- You need uptime monitoring. This is its core competence — synthetic checks from multiple probe regions, configurable intervals, string matching, custom headers, POST payloads, transaction monitoring for multi-step flows. We do none of that.
- You care about performance and real users. Page speed monitoring and Real User Monitoring are substantial products in their own right.
- You want alerting on outages, not calendars. Pingdom answers "is it up right now?". That's a different question from "will this still exist in ninety days?".

Where DomainChest is the better choice
It doesn't monitor domain registration at all
This is the gap worth understanding, because it's the failure that takes a site down hardest. Pingdom's HTTPS check configuration covers URL, protocol, interval, probe regions, port, authentication, string matching, POST data, custom headers, IPv6 and SSL/TLS certificate validity. There's no WHOIS or RDAP option anywhere in it.
That means an expiring domain — as distinct from an expiring certificate — is invisible to Pingdom until the moment the site stops resolving. At that point you get a down alert, which is true but late: the domain has already lapsed, and you're now in a grace period trying to recover it rather than having renewed it calmly six weeks earlier. Certificate warnings arrive closer to the wire
Pingdom does check certificate expiry, and it's included on every plan rather than being an upsell — that's genuinely good. But its documentation describes advance notice ranging from a day to about a month before expiry, with the default being notification on the day the certificate expires.
A month is enough time for a certificate you control. It's tighter than we'd like for a certificate that needs a purchase order, a vendor, or a change window.
Expiry consumes an uptime check
This one comes straight from Pingdom's own certificate documentation: when a certificate hits its expiry date, the check is marked DOWN, and while it's in that state "no other types of issues will be detected during this time." SolarWinds' own recommendation is to set up a separate check purely for expiry monitoring.
That's a real cost. Pingdom's pricing is per uptime check, so certificate expiry monitoring done properly means spending check slots — the thing you're paying for — on calendar watching.
Nothing watches who issues certificates for you
Pingdom checks the certificate currently being served. It doesn't watch Certificate Transparency logs, so a certificate issued for your domain by someone else — a mis-issuance, or one obtained by an attacker who briefly controlled a DNS record — doesn't register. The pricing sits in a different bracket
Pingdom starts at €16/month for ten uptime checks, with no free tier — a 30-day trial only. Our free tier covers three domains permanently, and paid plans start at $25 per year for 25 domains.
That gap is mostly a scope difference, not generosity: running probes from global locations every minute costs real money, and calendar-watching doesn't. But if expiry tracking is what you actually need, you shouldn't have to buy a synthetic monitoring platform to get it.
The honest recommendation
Use both, if you need uptime monitoring. They're complements, not substitutes. Pingdom tells you the site is down; we tell you the two dates that will take it down, far enough ahead to act.
If you don't need uptime monitoring, Pingdom is an expensive way to get certificate expiry alerts — and it still leaves your domain registrations entirely unwatched.
